Repent – A Fresh Start In 2019
We all want to better ourselves. Whether it be spiritually, physically, or emotionally, we ought to have goals ahead of us that we are striving towards. But before we start we can often sabotage ourselves by not dealing with sin within us. Sin manifests in numerous ways such as addiction, poor self-control, untempered anger, isolation, relational neglect. All sin when it is full grown leads to death. So if we are serious about moving into 2019 with the heart to pursue God and live a life honoring to him we ought to start with repentance.
How does repentance work?
- Examination: Looking inward and telling the truth about ourselves, our condition, our weakness, our sin, our need.
Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.
Who can discern his errors?
Declare me innocent from hidden faults.
Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins;
let them not have dominion over me!
- Conviction: Examination is allowing God to turn on the lights, and conviction is agreeing with God that we are out of line and need to change. It’s moving from evidence to belief.
Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:
- Hatred: True repentance calls us to genuinely hate the sin that still resides in us.
Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming.
For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
You don’t kill what you love. If our conviction only leads to temporary emotional uneasiness, we have not repented. We ought to be careful wounding what God has explicitly told us to kill.
- Resolve: There needs to be a RESOLVE of your will to act in accordance WITH your beliefs. There needs to be a conscious thought to enact what you want to do. The resolve or the motivation for change is what? God’s character and glory.
1 Peter 1:13-16:
Therefore, preparing your minds for action,and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
JESUS HAS NEVER (EVER) TURNED AWAY A REPENTANT SINNER. His capacity to clean things up is far beyond your ability to mess things up.
Luke 15:7 - Lost Sheep
Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance
