Majesty of Mystery

Series:

God is always within our Reach. But complete understanding of the depth and width and height of God’s character and power will always be beyond our Grasp. Being able to reach something is to encounter and experience and know what something is. But to grasp something is to be able to control, and fully understand what it is. God is more Majestic, Powerful, Wise, and Sovereign than we can ever fathom. This is why Paul says in Romans 11:33-36 –

33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

34 For who has known the mind of the Lord,

or who has been his counselor?”

35 Or who has given a gift to him

    that he might be repaid?”

36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

Likewise, the Bible testifies to God’s surpassing character,

Psalm 139:6 - Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.

Psalm 145:3 - Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.

Isaiah 55:8-9 - For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth,  so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

God is knowable and known, yet he remains mysterious, wondrous and incomprehensible. This is a tension that a Christian holds. Much like Divine Sovereignty and Human Responsibility, the problem of Evil and other tensions. But the Biblical authors and Christians throughout history DON'T SEE THIS AS A PROBLEM. Rather it results in worship in AWE AND WONDER

But could it be that one problem we have in our time is that we reduce God to something we can understand, judge, and critique? Indeed God invites us to bring our worries, our doubts, anxieties, fears and troubles to him. AND he sympathizes with us in these things.

Hebrews 4:15-16 - 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

But when our curiosities and pride cause us to accuse God of holding out on us, or that if we knew what God knew we could have made a better decision, we begin to follow in paths of those who oppose God. It is a Grace that THE GOD WHOSE DEPTHS CAN NEVER BE FOUND HAS FREELY CHOSEN TO REVEAL HIMSELF. And through his revealing (revelation), we can truly know him and continue to reach further into the depths of God’s riches of wisdom, which CULMINATES AND FINDS IT’S PINNACLE IN JESUS CHRIST.

Eph. 3:18-19 - 8 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

God’s grace has revealed to us the mysteries of his Character, and although we only know in part, our God will continue to draw us in to his bottom-less goodness, love and mercy throughout eternity. So may we seek him while he may be found, in his word, through the means of prayer, the Lords supper, fellowship of the saints, and through his indwelling spirit. Our God is worthy to be praised because he is infinitely better than life itself. Or as the Psalmist says in Psalm 63:3-4,

3 Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. 4 So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands..
